Wow What a great book I really enjoyed this course and this textbook that our professor recommended to us.This book focuses on these major topics that book covers 1 Image Representation2 Image Filtering and Enhancement both in Spatial and Fourier Domain 3 Recovering Image Quality4 Image Color Processing5 Image Wave Properties6 Image Compression7 Image Morphology and Segmentation8 Object RecognitionThis book requires you to know some matrix algebra, vector and multivariate calculus, signal and systems, a class that talks about computational algorithms, and a little bit of computer architecture MATLAB is extremely good to have for the projects While MATLAB has built in functions to do 90% of what the book talks about, learning how to program these concepts on your own will be rewarding.I HIGHLY recommend this book for those who want to create software for image editing i.e Gimp or Photoshop or want to design the hardware of graphical processing units or monitors This has A LOT of mathematical theory The practice problems at the end of each chapter are very good for study material This is a subject where you either you do understand the material or you don t, there is no in between.The only downside to this book is that there aren t a whole lot example problems While it is true that the back of the book has practice problems, my only wish is that the author would provide. The new edition of this books comes with some important updates, maybe the most important is the last chapter which discuss the subject of deep learning using convolutional neural networks CNN , showing how the backpropagation algorithm works in a plain neural network and in a CNN see images below But because it is a new edition , be wary with some typos.For image processing and computer vision, this book is superb.
