No one writes about mountaineering and its attendant hardships and victories brilliantly than Jon Krakauer In this collection of his finest work from such magazines as Outside and Smithsonian, Krakauer explores the subject from the unique and memorable perspective of one who has himself battled peaks like K, Denali, Everest, and, of course, Eiger always with a keen eye, an open heart, and a hunger for the ultimate experience Very much enjoyed this book wish Jon Krakauer would write another compilation like this It was both very harrowing and very amusing, plus I learned quite a lot What would make an experienced climber think it is a good idea to take a no doubt gazelle like hop over what looked like a narrow crevasse It was not narrow , or shallow, sadly I wondered what had become of the Burgess Twins Whatever rescuers are paid , it isn t enough And my goodness he describes Chamonix perfectly The hygiene information well don t read while you eat your lunch.Great read, please write another Many thanks. As a climber, I found this book to be a very interesting insight into ALL aspects of the wide spectrum of climbing in its various guises.Unique book, in that way.I really enjoyed it and it featured a couple of climbs I d also done in the French Alps.Interesting to read his experiences on those routes. I am fan of Krakauer and I particularly enjoyed his Into Thin Air Although this may lack the drama and immediacy of that he still gets to visit and meet some very interesting people, doing many creative and crazy things in some of the most dangerous and isolated parts of the world Always a reliable and agreeable voice on the great outdoors.
