If you like the Canadian Rockies and mountaineering than this book is for you A real page turner of a book. A great read, couldn t put it down. With heart pounding descriptions of avalanches and treacherous ascents, Barry Blanchard chronicles his transformation from a poor Native American white kid from the wrong side of the tracks to one of the most respected alpinists in the world Athe learned to rappel when he joined theLord Strathcone s Horse Army Cadets Soon kicked out for insubordination, he was already hooked on climbing and saw alpinism as a way to make his single mother proud and end his family s cycle of poverty He describes early climbs attempted with nothing to guide him but written trail descriptions and the cajones of youth He slowly acquired the skills, equipment and partners necessary to tackle and difficult climbs, farther and farther afield throughout the Canadian Rockies, into Alaska and the French Alps and on to Everest, Peru, and the challenging mountains in Pakistan From each he learned lessons that only nature and extreme endeavor can teach This is the story of the culture of climbing in the days of punk rock, spurred on by the rhythm of adrenaline and the arrogance of youth It is also a portrait of the power of the mountains to lift us Good condition Barry may not be Hemingway but he is genuine and real He tells his story with heart, never embellishing himself or his abilities His sharing of his climbing and his life allowed me an intimate look at both and I got so connected with him and the other climbers that when something happened to one of them later in the book, I really felt the loss It s inspiring that Barry lives a simple life doing what he loves most becoming a legend in his field but remaining humble and authentic This book also has a short but fantastic glossary at the end which gives a great description of the various climbing grades in the various type of climbing better then a lot of info I found on the internet If you want to get a real look at the life of climbing told by a man with heart, this is it As a side note, I love the quality of the paper and binding Fantastic job Barry and Patagonia Books Worthy Boardman Tasker winner.
