I had high hopes for this book, that was pushed by several celebrity endorsements, but instead it taught me not to fall for influencers trying to be writers Incredible goal, to cycle from Oregon to Patagonia and shake your sleeping self , but sadly the writer accomplished neither of these intentions.Instead, it is the self indulgent writings of a naive, narcissistic American millenial, undertaking an instagrammable version of a journey of self discovery by cycling to South America Poorly prepared, having never practiced any long distance bike rides, nor did he learn Spanish. As a journey of self discovery, one would imagine that he would embark on this trip alone, immersing himself into the cultures around him and embrace his own company for an oppprtunity for deep reflection Yet he was afraid to do this trip solo, and instead pairs up with Weston, a flaky sounding weed and magic mushroom lover, yet a person who has a great deal depth and balanced view on the world than our writer He also took breaks from the trip to go home He flew home for Christmas, missing Guatemala and parts of Nicaragua but said he wasn t sad to be missing it, but sad that he couldn t brag about being there He had regular visits from family and friends who paid for him when they got there and took long bus rides hitchhikes and taxis en route when they needed to make up time Finally, his interpretation of people he meets and his descriptions of places I found banal and at times insulting. He called Lima dirty and annoying and described a community of Andean people in Peru as vacant looking If someone he meets isn t his type of person aka not into coffee and craft beer he isn t interested, For the most part, my brain automatically discards the vast majority of people as forgettable.Instead, this book seems to be the authors tool to address his sexuality and religion Both of which he is ashamed of This made me feel both sad at this thought, and frustrated that he came no closer to acceptance of either at the end of his journey.

Really enjoyed this book I read a lot of travel literature and this is my favourite since Lone Rider by Elspeth Beard which I read a couple of years back Absorbing and very honest, I could relate to Jedediah s quest to escape the rat race.

Very relatable story as someone who has travelled solo for a period of time A great example of how masculinity does not have to have a bearing on someone s ability or deserving to embark on huge adventure.
